Rotary Club of Grand Rapids Announces New President!

Long-time Custer Business Development Executive, Shannon Kolarik, Named President of the Rotary Club
of Grand Rapids for 2025–2026

Grand Rapids, MI (November 4, 2025) — The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids is proud to announce
Shannon Kolarik as its President for the 2025–2026 term, effective July 1, 2025. Kolarik assumes
leadership of one of West Michigan’s most active service organizations, composed of more than
200 members committed to Rotary’s mission of Service Above Self.

In her role as President, Kolarik will lead the club’s Board of Directors and oversee the work of
its many committees, which drive initiatives in youth development, community service, and
international outreach. Her leadership will focus on engaging Rotarian's families and the next
generation of leaders, strengthening community partnerships, and fostering a culture of
collaboration throughout membership.
Kolarik has been a committed member of the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids for several years,
serving on the Board of Directors and contributing significantly to the Club’s strategic initiatives.
In 2018, she co-founded Club 77, introducing an innovative social format to monthly
programming. She has also played an active role in fundraising efforts throughout the club, and
joint service projects with the Muskegon Rotary. Most recently, Kolarik contributed to the
establishment of two new committees — Women in Rotary and the Legacy Care Committee —
both designed to enhance engagement, inclusivity, and long-term member support within the
organization.

Professionally, Kolarik is an Executive Account manager at Custer, the Steelcase furniture dealer
for West Michigan. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Grand Valley State
University and has built a career focused on relationship-building, strategic thinking and
community engagement.

Her volunteerism extends well beyond Rotary. Kolarik has contributed her time and talents to a
number of community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Kids’ Food Basket, Village
Water Filters, Genesis Waters, Ronald McDonald House, IKUS, and Feeding America West
Michigan. She is also dedicated to providing support and advocacy for working mothers within
her community.

At the club’s ceremonial “Passing of the Tiller” luncheon, Kolarik shared her vision for the year
ahead:

“Rotary has given me a deeper connection to this community and a greater sense of purpose. As President, I’m honored to steward this role, working alongside people who care deeply about service, fellowship and making a lasting impact. My
goal is to listen, learn and lead with intention—ensuring every member feels empowered to contribute and every initiative reflects our shared values.”

Kolarik lives in Grand Rapids with her husband and two young daughters. She enjoys reading,
golfing, traveling and spending time near sunshine and water. Her warmth, authenticity, and
drive make her a natural leader and a beloved member of the Rotary community.

The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids meets on the second, third, and fourth Thursdays of each
month at noon at the Kent Country Club. The first Thursday of the month features a 4:00 p.m.
social gathering held at various locations throughout the city. Visit grrotary.org or follow on
Facebook for more information.

Rotary International is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers
who see a world where people unite and act to create lasting change across the globe, in our
communities, and in ourselves. The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids was formed on March 29, 1913, making
it the second Rotary Club in Michigan and the 77th worldwide at the time. The club now boasts over 200
members and offers a variety of opportunities for members to connect socially and professionally,
including weekly luncheons featuring respected speakers who are national figures, state lawmakers, and local trendsetters. Since their first meeting in the historic Livingston Hotel, Rotary Club of Grand Rapids
members have worked with great care and diligence to fulfill the mission of Rotary International,
“to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace
through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

What an inspiring Rotary Club of Grand Rapids luncheon! Last Thursday we were honored to hear from Past Presidents Dave Custer (1986-87), Andy DeVries (1996-97), Derek Aten (2015-16), Jon Hankins (2020-21), and Paula Jastifer (2021-22), who shared fascinating stories about their presidencies and the club’s remarkable journey. Their insights highlighted the legacy of leadership that all our Past Presidents have contributed to, and we’re deeply grateful for each and every one of them for shaping our club’s vibrant history.

Since our founding on March 29, 1913, as the 77th Rotary Club worldwide and the second in Michigan, we’ve been led by 112 dedicated Past Presidents, with our 113th (Shannon Kolarik) currently serving – each leaving an incredible mark on our community.

On Thursday, the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids had the extraordinary honor of welcoming 99-year-old WWII veteran Gene Khorey as our featured speaker.

Mr. Khorey shared powerful stories from his service in combat across Europe and later in the Philippines after the war. A member of the 86th Infantry Division (The Blackhawks), he was drafted in 1945 and went on to serve with great courage and humility.

For his bravery, Mr. Khorey was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, a prestigious honor recognizing heroic or meritorious achievement in a combat zone.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Joel Westphal, Deputy Director at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, for joining us and skillfully moderating the conversation.

At our recent luncheon, we proudly held the Ceremonial “Passing of the Tiller” Luncheon, officially welcoming our new 2025-2026 Club President, Shannon Kolarik!

We also celebrated the incredible leadership of 2024-2025 President Eunice Lopez-Martin, whose extraordinary year at the helm brought inspiration, impact, and growth to our club. Eunice reflected on her goals and highlights from the year and honored several Rotarians with awards recognizing their outstanding service and embodiment of Rotary’s values.

Treasure Award – Neil Marchand – Presented to a Rotarian for their long-time support of the many fundraising events of the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids

Talent Award – J.R. Muller – Presented to a Rotarian for sharing their professional expertise to benefit the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids

President’s Award – Matt Tiedgen – Presented to a Rotarian who, through sustained, unstinting and unusual dedication to the ideal of “Service Above Self”, has contributed in a significant way to the established work of Rotary

Additionally, club members voted and approved two new Club Board members — Brian Hauenstein and Jax Merritt — who will help shape the future of our club. Welcome aboard!

In Rotary tradition, the “Passing of the Tiller” symbolizes the peaceful and purposeful transition of leadership from the outgoing Club President to the incoming one. Much like a tiller steers a ship, this ceremonial act represents the guidance and direction provided by Rotary leadership throughout the year.

Each year, the outgoing president reflects on their accomplishments, celebrates the club’s collective achievements, and officially hands over leadership to their successor. The incoming president, in turn, takes the helm with a renewed vision, ready to navigate the club through another year of service, fellowship, and impact.

This ceremony not only honors the dedication and service of the outgoing president but also marks the continuity and resilience of the Rotary mission: "Service Above Self."

Rotary is about service, leadership, and community—and this meeting captured it all. Here’s to a great year ahead under President Shannon’s leadership!.

Calling all Rotarians, we are in need for 4 of you wonderful giving members to help out making meals next Tuesday evening 4-6p for Ronald McDonald house. They have a beautiful kitchen facility for us and the families are so grateful for nutritious meals being available and ready for them when they get back from a long day at the hospital.
