DESCRIPTION:Tim Selgo spent 35 years in college athletics\, 7 as a basketball coach at his alma mater\, the University of Toledo\, 8 as Associate Athletics Director at Toledo\, and 20 as the Director of Athletics at Grand Valley State University from 1996 until his retirement as A.D. in July of 2016. \nDuring Selgo’s tenure as A.D. at GVSU\, The Lakers won 18 straight President’s Cups\, which is the all-sports trophy for their conference\, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  In addition\, the GVSU athletics programs captured the Division II Learfield Directors Cup\, the national all-sports trophy\, 11 times and finished in the top two in each of his final 15 years.  He was a 3-time winner of NACDA’s Central Region AD of the Year award. \nA well-respected leader in college athletics\, Selgo served on the NCAA DII Management Council for four years (2007-11)\, including serving as Chair of the Management Council in 2009\, the highest position of governance in NCAA DII. \nSelgo is a member of 3 halls of fame; The University of Toledo Athletics Hall of Fame\, the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame\, and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Hall of Fame.  He is currently a consultant for Athletics Staffing & Consultants\, a professor of Sports Management at Davenport University\, is a sought-after speaker on leadership\, and is the author of the book\, Anchor Up\, Competitive Greatness the Grand Valley Way.   \nTim and his wife Terry have been married for 35 years and have 3 children and 5 grandchildren\, all boys!

DESCRIPTION:Paul Leidig is the Director of the School of Computing and Information Systems at Grand Valley State University. \nDr. Leidig holds several positions of international leadership in computer science and information systems boards and organizations\, including serving on the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board\, the Association of Computing Machinery Education Council\, and as a Commissioner on the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. He is a past-president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Education Special Interest Group (EDSIG)\, and was named an AITP-EDSIG Fellow. In addition\, he serves as Grand Valley’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA)\, serves as the chair of the NCAA Academic Requirements Committee\, and a member of the NCAA DII Management Council. \nHe began his career over 40 years ago as the data processing director of a regional hospital. His academic career includes serving eight years on the faculty of James Madison University prior to joining Grand Valley State University in 1991.  He teaches courses on the management of information systems and information systems policy\, and has authored several textbooks on database systems and applications.  Each summer he leads a study-abroad program in Switzerland. Dr. Leidig received his Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University\, M.B.A from James Madison University\, and B.S. from Eastern Mennonite University. \nPaul and his wife Judy have two children\, and have been blessed with eight grandchildren.

SUMMARY:3.8.18 - Jennifer Heemstra
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Heemstra\, professional pianist and entrepreneur\, received the College of Music Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University and was the commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2017.  In December 2014\, she founded the Kolkata Classics trust which provides free health services for trafficked women\, educates children from the slums to the elite and exposes the citizens of Kolkata\, India to high quality classical music.  She has put on 70 concerts and performed for and worked with over 65\,000 adults/children in South Asia.  For her work\, she was presented with the Secretary of State Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad from John Kerry. \nIn 2017\, Heemstra founded the Pitch Pipe Foundation\, a US-based NGO which links great artists to great need.  This past August she organized and headlined “On the Road – a patriotic salute to our Veterans.”  Last month Heemstra organized over 50 concerts to support National Salute to Veteran Patients Week at Veterans Affairs medical facilities nationwide. \nDuring her seven years in Cleveland\, Ms. Heemstra worked as a Lecturer and Staff Accompanist for over 350 performances in the music department at Case Western Reserve University\, performed with the Cleveland Opera and Lyric Opera\, and frequently concertized with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. \nHeemstra earned her Master of Music from The Cleveland Institute of Music and a Bachelor of Music with honors from Michigan State University.  In addition she is a Rotarian and member of the MTNA and College Music Society.

DESCRIPTION:Christopher Shires joined the Gilmore Car Museum as its Executive Director in January 2017\, organizing several new exhibitions and driving a collection storage building campaign. \nPrior to this\, Chris has served as the Holland Museum as its Executive Director leading the organization through American Alliance of Museum’s reaccreditation\, rebranding\, and new marketing initiatives.  Before this position\, Shires served as the Director of Interpretation and Programs at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores\, Michigan\, where he helped develop a series of new public and educational programs and exhibits for the Ford House. \nPrior to his time in Michigan\, Shires first served as the Interpretive Services Manager and later\, the Director of Exhibits\, Education and Programs\, at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati\, Ohio. As a member of the new museum’s start-up team. Other previous positions were held at the Campbell House Museum and the St. Louis Mercantile Library. \nShires earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Marshall University and a Master of Arts in History\, along with a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies\, from the University of Missouri – St. Louis. \nChris and his wife Greta have a seven-year-old son\, Fuller and five-year-old daughter\, Campbell.

SUMMARY:2.15.18 - Honorable David Murkowski
DESCRIPTION:Judge David M. Murkowski was born and raised in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. \nIn 1979 he graduated cum laude from Marquette University\, where he was awarded the university’s Outstanding Student Service Award and the Polanki College Achievement Scholarship. In 1979 Judge Murkowski was also inducted into the National Jesuit Honor Society. He attended Western Michigan University’ s Thomas M. Cooley Law School and was an honor roll graduate in 1983. \nJudge Murkowski served as law clerk to the Michigan House of Representatives Civil Rights Committee and worked as a solo practitioner in Grand Rapids until 1993\, when he joined the law firm of Dilley & Dilley. He specialized in criminal defense\, juvenile neglect and delinquency and probate law\, and served as managing partner of Dilley & Dilley\, Murkowski & Goller until 2006 when he was appointed to the Kent County Probate bench to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Janet A. Haynes. \nIn December of 2007\, the Michigan Supreme Court appointed Judge Murkowski to serve as the Chief Judge of the Kent County Probate Court commencing January 1\, 2008. \nJudge Murkowski currently serves as the President of the Michigan Probate Judges Association and as a member of the Judicial Council of the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He has previously served as council member of the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Kent County Family and Children’s Coordinating Council. Judge Murkowski has lectured for the Michigan Judicial Institute\, ICLE’s Probate and Estate Planning Institute\, the Michigan Probate Judges Association and the Grand Rapids Bar Association . Judge Murkowski is a chapter author of Michigan Probate Litigation: A Guide to Contested Litigation\, 211d Ed.\, a contributor to the Michigan Probate Benchbook\, associate editor of Inter-Com\, a journal publication of the Michigan Probate Judges Association\, and was a contributor to the drafting of the Michigan Trust Code. In 2014\, Judge Murkowski was the recipient of the Judicial Contributions in Law and Aging Award by Elder Law of Michigan\, was selected as a Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly\, and was elected as a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. \n  \nPROBATE COURT \nMission Statement – The mission of the Kent County Probate Court is to provide an accessible and person-centered venue to secure the peaceful and sound resolution of matters\, where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. \nThe Probate Court is a trial court of statutory jurisdiction in Michigan. It has  exclusive jurisdiction over matters relating to: the estates of decedents; trusts; guardianships of developmentally disabled persons\, legally incapacitated adults\, and minors; conservatorships for protected adults and minors\, protective orders; accounts of other fiduciaries; and petitions for hospitalization of mentally ill persons. The Probate Court also has jurisdiction over a myriad of other types of civil actions\, in particular where  an estate\, trust\, fiduciary or ward is a party. By the nature of the matters within its jurisdiction\, the Probate Court is primarily concerned with the protection of incapacitated individuals and their assets and the proper transfer of assets at death.

DESCRIPTION:Tina Freese Decker\, MHA\, MSIE\, FACHE\nTina Freese Decker is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Spectrum Health\, a $6 billion not-for-profit integrated health system based in West Michigan. She is an experienced leader in strategic planning\, business development\, operations and governance. Tina is responsible for advancing the strategy and leading operations of the organization\, including Spectrum Health Hospital Group\, Spectrum Health Medical Group\, human resources and information services among other departments. In her role\, she will continue to help align leadership and operations in Spectrum Health to better meet the challenges and opportunities within the health care industry. \nTina joined Spectrum Health in 2002 as an administrative fellow and was named system director of planning and strategic development in 2003. She was promoted to vice president in 2006. During this time\, Tina also served as executive director of the Regional Hospital Network\, a group of 21 West Michigan hospitals. \nTina served as president of Spectrum Health United and Kelsey hospitals beginning in 2011\, providing strategic direction for the hospitals and subsidiaries. In 2013\, Tina was named senior vice president/chief strategy officer for Spectrum Health and in the summer of 2014\, she was named president of Spectrum Health Hospital Group\, responsible for strategy\, operations and growth for Spectrum Health’s 12 award-winning hospitals (Butterworth Hospital\, Blodgett Hospital\, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital\, Gerber Memorial\, Big Rapids Hospital\, Ludington Hospital\, Pennock\, United Hospital\, Kelsey Hospital\, Reed City Hospital and Zeeland Community Hospital)\, and 180 ambulatory and service sites. In 2017\, she was named executive vice president and chief operating officer. \nAs a health system\, Spectrum Health was named one of the nation’s 15 Top Health Systems—and in the top five among the largest health systems—in 2017 by Truven Health Analytics®\, part of IBM Watson HealthTM for the sixth time since 2010. This recognition was based largely on the strength of the Spectrum Health Hospital Group and our flagship tertiary/quaternary care center\, Butterworth Hospital. In 2017\, Spectrum Health received the Foster G. McGaw Prize\, one of the most revered community service awards in health care\, sponsored by the Baxter International Foundation\, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and its non-profit affiliate Health Research & Educational Trust. \nTina is leading a care transformation initiative at Spectrum Health grounded in culture change\, improved decision-making and patient-centric care coordination. Tina participates in the Health Management Academy\, the Healthcare Executive Study Society and the Talent 2025 CEO Council. \nTina was named among Crain’s Detroit Business 100 Most Influential Women in 2016 and Grand Rapids’ Business Journal’s 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan in 2016 and 2014. Tina was honored as 2015 Modern Healthcare Up and Comer\, as well as University of Iowa Outstanding Young Alumni in 2014. He is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the airport. \nPrior to assuming his current duties in January 2017\, he was Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer for the Allegheny County Airport Authority in Pittsburgh\, PA. He was responsible for day-to-day oversight of the airport system and its 460+ staff members\, as well as major initiatives such as air service negotiations\, airline agreement negotiations\, real estate development\, etc. \nJim has held a number of positions within the aviation industry including: Contract Administrator Supervisor & Finance Director\, both with the Allegheny County Department of Aviation in Pittsburgh\, PA beginning in 1993\, Deputy Executive Director – Finance & Administration with the Allegheny County Airport Authority\, Pittsburgh\, PA beginning in 1997\, Deputy Airport Director – Finance\, Business & Administration/CFO with the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority in Raleigh\, NC beginning in 2001\, and then returning to the Allegheny County Airport Authority in Pittsburgh\, PA in 2001 as the Executive Vice President and CFO. Jim has nearly 25 years experience in the aviation management industry. \nJim holds a Master of Business Administration from Duquesne University with concentrations in Finance\, Accounting and Management Information Systems and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from Duquesne University. \nJim is an Accredited Airport Executive with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE)\, is a member of their Board of Examiners and is a member of their Finance & Administration Committee. Jim is an International Airport Professional (IAP) with Airports Council International (ACI) & International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). DESCRIPTION:Sean Welsh will be introducing James Goble\, an expert in Cyber Fraud Dectection\, Fraud Detection Operations and Security Operations from PNC Financial Group. \nJames will be discussing the threats that we face everyday from cyber fraud and ways for us to protect ourselves. \n  \nSean Welsh \nSean began his banking career in 1986 with American National Bank & Trust Company of Chicago after graduating from Michigan State University.  After completing his credit training\, he managed a large portfolio of loans to middle market companies located throughout the Midwest.  In 1991 he joined National City’s predecessor bank\, First of America.  Welsh held several line and management positions with First of America including Vice President & Group Manager; Corporate Banking and Vice President & Group Manager- Investment Real Estate.  In addition\, as Vice President of Corporate Finance\, he was responsible for delivering First of America’s Corporate Finance capabilities to the Michigan\, Illinois and Indiana markets. \nSean currently serves as Regional President for the Western Michigan Market.  Previously he served as Senior Vice President and Division Manager for National City’s Corporate Banking group in Chicago and Northern Illinois.  Sean relocated to Chicago from Kalamazoo in 1998 to establish National City’s Corporate Banking line of business in Chicago. \nSean currently serves on the Boards of The Right Place\, Spectrum Health\, Southwest Michigan First\, YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids\, Talent 2025 and Economic Club of Grand Rapids.  He is married and has three daughters. \n

Haas is Grand Valley State University’s fourth president. \nDuring the past 35 years\, Tom Haas has been a tenured faculty member\, department chair\, dean\, vice president and president. Just prior to his appointment in 2006\, Haas was president of the State University of New York Cobleskill.  In addition to his appointment as president of Grand Valley\, Haas has also been appointed professor of chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. \nHe is a 1973 honors graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  He then earned a Master of Science (MS) in chemistry; another in environmental health sciences from The University of Michigan. Haas also holds a MS in human resources management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy\, NY) and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Connecticut (Storrs\, CT). Fellowship experiences in higher education include Yale University Faculty Fellow and an American Council on Education Fellow at Western Michigan University.  He completed executive leadership programs at Harvard University.  He was recently recognized with an honorary degree\, Doctor of Science\, by Kingston University in the UK and a second from Cracow University of Economics

DESCRIPTION:Edward C. Swart\, PhD\, Rotary District 6290 Governor 2017-18 \nEd\, a semi-retired clinical psychologist\, holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University and completed a residency at Northwestern University Medical School.  For eight years\, he was the clinical director of Ottawa County Community Mental Health Services\, and he was in private practice (Psychological Services Center\, LC\, with PDG Don Moss) for 25 years in Holland\, Grand Haven\, Spring Lake\, Muskegon\, and Allendale. For several years he was president of one of the largest psychologist-owned practices in Michigan.  In his semi-retirement\, Ed currently is a consulting supervisor to a local counseling agency. \nVolunteering has always played an important role in Ed’s life.  He spends several days a week in elementary schools; he chairs the Rotary Leaders for the 21st century leadership training program for middle schoolers which is co-sponsored by the Holland and Zeeland Rotary clubs; he has served on\, and chaired\, a number of church and community boards\, including a local Cub Scout committee and the local chapter of the American Red Cross where he also started the Disaster Mental Health team. \nEd has been a member of the Rotary Club of Holland since 1984 and was President when the club sponsored the Holland AM Club.  He has been active in Rotary Youth Exchange as YEO\, host parent\, Youth Protection Officer\, and District Chair\, and has mentored Rotary Ambassadorial and Peace Scholars.  In the International Rotary arena\, Ed has attended Rotary International Conventions in three countries and has served in Honduras for HHOP (Health and Humanitarian Outreach Projects) on their water and sanitation projects. \nIn 2004\, Ed received his Club’s Distinguished Service Award.  In the spirit of supporting the work of Rotary International\, he is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and that tradition continues in the family with his wife Carol\, their three children and his late wife Jan\, all being Paul Harris Fellows.  Ed and Carol first met in Rotary so it was a natural that he proposed to her at a Club meeting. \nThey enjoy football – GO BLUE! – theater\, concerts\, sailing\, being active in Rotary\, and spending time with their three children and three grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:James Robert Redford was appointed interim director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency by Gov. Rick Snyder on Feb. 19\, 2016 and director on April 27\, 2016. \nIn September 1984\, Redford was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) student program by his brother\, who was then a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. Following law school\, Redford served five years on active duty and an additional 23 years in the Navy Reserves. His assignments included several Staff Judge Advocate tours and three commanding officer assignments. \nIn 2007\, Redford was selected to serve as a judge of the Navy and Marine Corps trial judiciary\, serving as Commanding Officer of the Navy Reserve Trial Judiciary. His last assignment was in 2009 as Legal and Legislative Affairs Counsel to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. \nIn July 2012\, Redford transferred to retired status at the rank of Captain (O-6). His awards include the Legion of Merit Medal\, Meritorious Service Medal (twice)\, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six times)\, Navy Achievement Medal (six times) and National Defense Medal (twice). \nPrior to his MVAA appointment\, he served as the governor’s chief legal counsel\, Kent County Circuit Court judge and assistant U.S. attorney in the Western District of Michigan. \nRedford earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from John Carroll University (Ohio) and his juris doctorate from the University of Detroit Law School. \nHe is married to Dianne Redford and has three children.

DESCRIPTION:Karen McCarthy is a Regional Public Affairs Manager for Consumers Energy\, based in Grand Rapids.  She is responsible for local government and community relations\, economic development and charitable giving in southern Kent County and western Ottawa County\, and supervises a team of employees with similar responsibilities in southwest and west Michigan. \nKaren was a member of the Ottawa County Economic Development Office Board of Directors until it merged with Lakeshore Advantage in late 2014.  She serves on the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce Environmental Affairs Committee\, Tax and Regulatory Affairs Committee and Public Policy Council.  She chairs the Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce Government Matters Committee\, which was named the Committee of the Year in 2013. Karen was appointed by the Mayor to serve on the City of Grand Rapids Urban Forestry Committee and the River Corridor Plan Committee.  She is a former member of planning commissions in Cascade Charter Township and the City of Kentwood.  Additionally\, Karen volunteers with the Heart of West Michigan United Way\, the Michigan Women’s Foundation\, and Cornell University’s Project FeederWatch. \nKaren has worked for Consumers Energy for 32 years.  She formerly chaired the company’s political action committee and was selected as Employee for Better Government of the Year in 2011.  She previously worked for the Michigan Legislature\,  Michigan State University and DeWitt Public Schools. \nKaren graduated cum laude from Furman University in Greenville\, S.C.\, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education\, and is an accredited member (APR) of the Public Relations Society of America.  In her spare time\, she enjoys birding\, reading and gardening.  Karen and her family live in Alto.

She previously served as a Second Ward City Commissioner for 10 years. \nMayor Bliss also is an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University’s School of Social Work. She earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and criminal justice from the University of South Alabama and a master’s in social work from Michigan State University. \nMayor Bliss is active in her profession and in the community. She is President of the Michigan Municipal League and serves on the boards of the Downtown Development Authority\, Experience Grand Rapids\, Grand Valley Metro Council\, Kent County Land Bank Authority and Interurban Transit Partnership\, among many other organizations. \nShe is a member of the West Michigan Environmental Leadership Network\, and she serves on the Mayors Innovation Project Steering Committee. \nMayor Bliss has been recognized and honored locally as well as statewide for her commitment\, dedication and work in the field of child abuse and neglect and for her leadership in the community. Brann’s Steakhouse & Grille now has ten locations across Michigan and is heavily involved in the communities they serve. \nJohnny Brann Sr. is a leading advocate for law enforcement\, tirelessly fundraising\, volunteering\, and spearheading efforts to support families of fallen officers\, dedicate police memorials (including the Service Above Selfie grand prize winning contribution to the Richmond Park Memorial)\, and challenge local government to increase funding. Further\, Johnny continues to aid Veterans and active military\, as well as fire departments\, and other emergency/first responder heroes. He also gives back to his community by serving small business groups\, neighborhood associations\, school systems and youth sports programs\, and many other local and non-profit organizations. \n  \nJohnny Brann Jr. \nJohnny Jr. continues the proud family restaurant tradition by growing both the legendary Brann’s Steakhouse & Grille brand and the new Kitchen 67 brand. DESCRIPTION:Matt Chapman\, Project coordinator and director of Grand Rapids Whitewater earned a BS in Advertising and Public Relations and holds a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Grand Valley State University. Matt spent his summers as a child playing in and along the Chippewa River in Midland\, MI. where he first developed a passion for the outdoors. Matt came to Grand Rapids Whitewater in 2015 after serving as the Executive Director of Alternatives in Motion for four years. Matt brings over 10 years of nonprofit fundraising and leadership development experience to the Grand Rapids Whitewater team and is excited to be part the historic effort to put the rapids back in the Grand for everyone. \n  \nWendy Ogilvie\, Director of Environmental Programs; Grand Valley Metro Council (GVMC) \nWendy holds a BS in Forestry from The University of Michigan and an MS in Resource Development from Michigan State University. She worked for Fishbeck\, Thompson\, Carr & Huber\, Inc. for 13 years focusing on water resource management projects. She joined GVMC in 2013 as the Director of Environmental Programs. Her work focuses on watershed & stormwater management\, including facilitating Municipal Stormwater Permits and promoting green infrastructure practices. She is currently working with partners through the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds and Grand Rapids Whitewater to restore connective and improve habitat in the Grand River. \nPresentation Description: Grand Rapids Whitewater is an innovative\, local nonprofit organization focused on the revitalization of the Grand River through Grand Rapids and restoration of the city’s historic namesake rapids. The goals of this project are to expand recreational uses\, improve aquatic habitats\, enhance environmental quality of the community\, and boost tourism\, business growth and employment opportunities along the riverfront in Grand Rapids and throughout West Michigan. Grand Rapids Whitewater\, in partnership with numerous agencies and organizations\, including the City of Grand Rapids and the Grand Valley Metro Council\, has been studying the project since 2009. This presentation will illustrate historical uses of the Grand River\, showcase the complexities of the project\, provide a current project update\, and explore the environmental\, economic\, and social benefits associated with a revitalized Grand River system.

SUMMARY:7.13.17 - Christian Gaines
DESCRIPTION:Christian Gaines was born in Brussels\, Belgium to American parents\, moved to the United Kingdom when he was four years old\, then came to the United States in 1984 to attend Vassar College\, graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in English Literature. \nIn 1988\, Christian helped to start the American Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival\, serving until 1994 as Administrative Director of this communication and hospitality center for the American film community attending Cannes. In 1990\, he also went to work for the Hawaii International Film Festival as Administrator\, and then served as Film Coordinator and Film Programmer in Hawaii from 1992 until 1994\, dividing his time between Honolulu\, Los Angeles and Cannes. During that time\, he also coordinated the Asia-Pacific Film Tour\, a fifteen-film\, eleven-city tour of films from Asia and the Pacific Rim. \nIn August 1994\, Christian was appointed Senior Film Programmer at the Sundance Film Festival where he was part of the team that programmed the 1995 and 1996 Sundance Film Festivals. He was also the first Director of New Media for the Sundance Institute and a consultant for the Sundance Channel. From 1996 to 2000 he served as Festival Director and Director of Programming for the Hawaii International Film Festival\, where he was responsible for its overall management and programming. \nIn June 2000\, Christian was appointed Director of Festivals at the American Film Institute (AFI)\, where he was responsible for several festival and film programming projects\, including the annual AFI FEST presented by Audi. Christian developed AFI’s year-round exhibition programs of film series\, mini-festivals\, retrospectives and exclusive advance screenings – “AFI at ArcLight” and “Cinema’s Legacy: How Great Filmmakers Inspire Great Filmmakers.” In his first few years at AFI\, Christian helped to start SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival\, now called AFI Docs. In his role at AFI\, Christian also spearheaded the launch of the Dallas International Film Festival. \nIn 2008\, Christian joined IMDb.com\, an Amazon.com company\, where he was Director of Festival Strategy and Business Development overseeing the global expansion of Withoutabox.com\, a web community and film submission platform connecting filmmakers to film festivals worldwide. \nIn April 2013 Christian joined ArtPrize as Executive Director. ArtPrize is a radically open\, independently organized international art competition\, annually attracting over 400\,000 attendees and around 1\,500 artists to Grand Rapids\, Michigan over 19 days. $500\,000 is awarded to artists through prizes that are determined equally by both public vote and expert jury. ArtPrize encourages critical discourse\, celebrates artists\, transforms urban space and promotes cultural understanding. \nChristian has served on numerous film festival juries including Sundance\, SXSW\, Denver\, Dallas\, Montreal and Warsaw; has participated on numerous panels worldwide about film\, film festivals\, art and technology; has independently consulted for several film festivals and film projects; has attended many\, many film festivals around the world; serves on the IFP Program Advisory Board\, the Film Collaborative Advisory Board and has filed periodically for the online independent film daily Indiewire.com. He is a council member on the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. \nChristian is a movie and music fanatic\, has run seven marathons (and counting) and was the bass player in an LA-area rock band. He has a regular music show on community radio WYCE-FM. Christian is married to Dr. Kristen Taylor\, a cognitive psychologist\, writer and development specialist. They have two spectacular children Lola (21) and Luke (18) and they recently traded Los Angeles for Grand Rapids in West Michigan to play a part in its growing reputation as a hotbed for art\, design\, culture\, innovation and urbanism.

DESCRIPTION:Thomas R. Dilley is a retired attorney and frequent lecturer on cemetery history in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. He is the author of several books of local history\, and he is a member of the Grand Rapids Historical Commission\, trustee of the Grand Rapids Historical Society\, past chair of the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation\, and trustee of the Grand Rapids Public Museum Foundation. \nThomas is a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids\, where he lives with his wife\, Debra\, daughter\, Sarah\, and basset hound\, Ruthie. His 40-year interest in the history of his hometown is reflected in his avid collection of the postcards in Grand Rapids: Community and Industry\, as well as a large assortment of other materials documenting the history of the city.
