DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kevin Guskiewicz – President\, Michigan State University \nBio: \nKevin M. Guskiewicz\, a neuroscientist\, academic leader and concussion researcher\, was appointed president-elect of Michigan State University on Dec. 8\, 2023\, by the MSU Board of Trustees and started as president on March 4\, 2024. \nA member of the University of North Carolina’s faculty since 1995 and founding director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes\, Guskiewicz was appointed UNC’s Chancellor in 2019. He is a nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions and maintains an active research portfolio\, serving as co-principal investigator on two multi-center research grants. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of sports medicine and neuroscience. \nHis team’s groundbreaking work has garnered numerous awards and has influenced concussion guidelines in the NFL and NCAA. In 2011\, Guskiewicz received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for his innovative work on the diagnosis\, treatment and prevention of sport-related concussions. In 2011\, he convinced the NFL and NCAA to change the kickoff rule\, which resulted in a 50% reduction in concussions on kickoffs. In 2013\, Time magazine named him a Game Changer\, one of 18 “innovators and problem-solvers that are inspiring change in America.” \nGuskiewicz earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Chester University\, a master’s in exercise physiology/athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate in sports medicine from the University of Virginia. \nBorn and raised in Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, he and his wife Amy have four children: Jacob\, Nathan\, Adam and Tessa.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mark Washington – City Manager\, City of Grand Rapids \nSpeaker Topic: Balancing Commerical and Community Interests in Decision Making for City Development \nBIO: \n\nMark Washington has been Grand Rapids’ City Manager since October 2018. As City Manager\, he functions as the municipal corporation’s Chief Executive Officer. He oversees a $690 million budget\, a 2700-person workforce and all city departments\, operations\, policies and programs related to public safety\, economic development\, community services\, mobility\, infrastructure\, health\, environment\, recreation and community engagement. He is committed to making Grand Rapids a city that is nationally recognized for being equitable\, welcoming\, innovative and collaborative with a robust economy\, safe and healthy community and the opportunity for a high quality of life for all. \n\n\nSince arriving in Grand Rapids\, Mark has led efforts to create a strategic plan\, increase efficiencies of government services\, establish an equitable economic development and mobility strategy\, create a public safety oversight and accountability office\, establish an equity office and innovation office\, launch a homeless outreach team and reaffirm the City’s commitment to sustainability. \n\n\nMark has 27 years of experience in public sector service. Before becoming Grand Rapids’ City Manager\, he served as Assistant City Manager for the City of Austin\, Texas. In that role\, he assisted the City Manager in operating a workforce of 14\,000 employees and a $4.1 billion budget. He also provided direct executive oversight to several departments\, including human resources\, labor relations\, fleet services\, communications and technology management\, building services\, innovation\, telecommunications\, regulatory affairs and the Austin Convention Center. He provided executive leadership on labor contract negotiations\, improving police oversight and community relations\, hosting and planning large events such as South by Southwest (SXSW) and creating public-private partnerships to address community challenges such as equity\, homelessness\, digital inclusion\, housing/tenant rights\, right-of-way uses for disruptive technology and workforce development for marginalized populations. \n\n\nBefore that\, Mark served as Director of Human Resources and Civil Service for the City of Austin. In that role\, he led efforts that resulted in the City of Austin being recognized among the top 10 employers by Forbes Magazine thanks to efforts around strategic planning\, talent management\, employee engagement\, labor management\, risk management\, equity\, benefits and leadership development. He previously served as Assistant Director of Human Resources for the City of Fort Worth\, Texas (6\,500 employees)\, overseeing compensation\, benefits\, wellness\, safety and workers’ compensation. He also served as Street Services Operations Program Manager for the City of Fort Worth\, overseeing its in-house street maintenance and overlay program. \n\n\nHe has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Tarleton State University\, a master’s degree in business administration from Amberton University and a master of arts degree and doctorate degree in education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. \n\n\nMark is a member of the International City/County Management Association\, Michigan Municipal Executives\, and Grand Valley Metropolitan Council. He also serves on the Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.\, Spectrum Health Community Commitment\, National Forum for Black Public Administrators\, TenthFuture Inc.\, Art Prize and Tarleton State University College of Business advisory boards. He is a Trustee of the Michigan Municipal League and Paul Quinn College. He previously served as State President of the International Public Management Association Texas chapter and is a former board member of the Texas Municipal Human Resources Association and Austin Area Urban League\, among other organizations. He holds the following certifications: International City/County Management Association Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM) International Public Management Association-Senior Certified Professional (IPMA-HR-SCP)\, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)\, HR Certification Institute and Society for Human Resources Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and Certified Government Benefit Administrator certification from the state and local Government Benefit Association (CGBA)\, among others. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and he is an ordained minister.

As computers became more affordable and more electronics began entering the waste stream\, Comprenew expanded its services to include recycling to help reduce this environmental threat. Today\, Comprenew is one of the highest certified electronics service and recycling companies in the world. \nBecause electronics is the fastest growing part of our waste stream\, Scott would like to share about the importance of doing everything we can to ensure that electronics do not harm people and the environment. Through Comprenew’s recycling procedures and zero-landfill policy\, Scott works to ensure electronics are only a benefit to society. \nGrowing up in Illinois\, New York and Michigan\, Scott’s favorite subject in school was Science. In college\, he studied Business/Economics and Political Science at Calvin University. He is passionate about equity\, environmental protection\, business leadership and spending time with family at his lake cottage. Scott and his wife\, Jan\, have three grown children and two grandchildren.

He specializes in 19th and 20th-century Continental philosophy\, with a particular focus on hermeneutic phenomenology and the philosophical tradition of interpretation. \nVessey earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 1996\, following a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy from St. Olaf College\, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. \nHis research interests include the works of Hans-Georg Gadamer\, J.G. Fichte\, Wilhelm von Humboldt\, Edmund Husserl\, Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Vessey’s scholarship explores themes such as intersubjectivity\, language\, time-consciousness\, and embodied subjectivity. He has contributed to the field through various publications and presentations\, including keynote addresses and conference papers. \nIn addition to his academic work\, Vessey is actively involved in the North American Society for Philosophical Hermeneutics (NASPH)\, serving as both a board member and treasurer.

Lara previously served as the chief executive officer of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore. She also held executive-level positions at Chrysler Corporation as well as at major automotive suppliers. \nAdditionally\, Gloria has served on the Corewell Health System – West Board of Directors from 2022 to 2023\, on the Spectrum Health System Board from 2017 to 2022\, and on the Spectrum Health Hospital Group Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2017\, chairing the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Committee from 2016 to 2017. A native of Los Angeles\, CA\, Lara earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from California State University\, Fullerton\, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School\, Boston\, MA. Lara is an Independent\, appointed to the Commission by Governor Whitmer for a term that began in December 2020.

In 2015\, he became a senior recruiter for Spectrum Heath Talent Acquisition and led a team that developed and implemented an organization-wide\, paid internship program for 100-plus summer interns annually. \nA native of San Diego\, CA\, James earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Kentucky State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Grand Valley State University. \n“MCC is a huge part of my professional foundation\,” added James. “I served as director of the Intercultural Community Leadership Academy\, a community program that operated out of MCC. I was honored to be a recipient of the Love in Action award in 2007\, presented by MCC. Also\, as past chair of the Muskegon County Diversity Committee\, I was part of numerous Rev. DESCRIPTION:The Michael Sadler Foundation develops and supports programs that emphasize the combination of academic excellence\, athletic achievement\, character strength and leadership. \nOur Inspiration\n\nMichael Sadler’s extraordinary life was abruptly halted when he died in a tragic car accident in Wisconsin on July 23\, 2016.  At the time\, he was volunteering at a kicking camp to mentor young players. His commitment to helping others\, contributing to community and embracing his love of family\, friends\, and society was constant. He lived his life with impeccable character. Only after his death did we realize the tens of thousands of lives he affected because of his integrity and the way he chose to live life. \n\n\nMichael earned unparalleled recognition in academics and athletics.  At MSU he earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a master’s degree in Public Policy. He was an All-American as well as the first-ever\, four-time Academic All American in MSU history. Michael was a member of the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Class of 2014 and a William V. Campbell trophy finalist.  He was awarded the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor in 2014 for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. Awards that Mike received are now being renamed in his honor.  Michael was proud to be a Spartan and was excited to be entering Stanford Law School. She attended Wayne State University Law School where she received her Juris Doctorate in May\, 2000. She was active in variety of law school activities and she attained a final year grade point average of 3.57/4.0. She successfully competed in various law school competitions including\, but not limited to Moot Court evidence competitions\, acting as Article Editor of The Journal of Law in Society\, Executive Board member of Moot Court (Director of Outside Competitions)\, working on the academic committee of the Black Law Student Association\, and being an active student member of the Wolverine Bar Association. In addition\, Ms. Scott received many scholarships and awards throughout her law school career. \nMs. Scott became an attorney in November 2000\, and was immediately recruited and hired as the FIRST African American Assistant Prosecutor in the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s office where her initial responsibility was handling district court cases\, which included misdemeanors\, ordinance violations and other hearings within the district court. However\, after much success and proving herself a great trial attorney\, she was promptly promoted to Circuit Court\, where she handled many cases advocating for victims until she left the Prosecutor’s office in 2003. \nFollowing her tenure at the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s office\, Ms. Scott was hired by the law firm of Williams Hughes Corwin & Sininger\, PC (k/n/a Williams Hughes\, PLLC)\, where she embarked on the journey of a different practice of law; namely the handling of cases for municipalities\, civil cases for the county\, family law\, corporate law\, real estate and social security disability matters. As part of her practice at Williams Hughes Corwin & Sininger\, PC\, she was also awarded a public defender contract handling one of the abuse and neglect dockets in Muskegon County. Ms. Scott remained an associate at Williams Hughes Corwin & Sininger\, PC\, until 2005. \nIn 2005 she decided that after five years of significant experience handling all types of cases\, that she wanted to become an entrepreneur and start her own law practice. Becoming a business owner\, in fact the first minority (African American and female) law firm in Muskegon County was exciting\, challenging\, and very rewarding. Her law firm has grown significantly over the years and she now employs a full time staff of five (5). \nIn 2018\, Ms. Scott was elected to an 8 year term on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees. A testament to the high regard placed on Ms. Scott for her professional accomplishments\, ethical standards and peer recognition\, Ms. Scott was recently named a 2019 Athena of the Lakeshore Award Recipient and 2021 Greater Muskegon Woman’s Club Woman of Accomplishment. In 2014\, she became the FIRST person of color to serve as President of the prestigious Muskegon Rotary Club. Currently\, Ms. Scott serves as President of the Muskegon Heights Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority\, Inc. As well\, she serves on the Boards for Access Health\, Boys & Girl’s Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore\, Panel One of the Michigan Attorney Disciplinary Commission (County of Muskegon); and is also a member of the Muskegon Rescue Mission’s Personnel Committee. Ms. Scott is also the Chair of the Muskegon Rotary Club’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee\, Retention Committee and serves as the Co-Chair for the Life Leadership Committee and the Community Service Council. \nIn the past she has served on the following boards: United Way of the Lakeshore\, Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce and Family Services Center Workforce Development Center. Additionally\, she serves as Legal Counsel for the International Churches of God In Christ\, which is the largest African American church in the world. She is also one of the only attorneys in West Michigan to be dually licensed to practice law in the state of New York. However\, her proudest accomplishment is being the parent of her son.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker Topic: Sgt Kribs will discuss the duties of K-9 dogs including searching for drugs and explosives\, locating missing people\, finding crime scene evidence\, protecting officers and other people\, and attacking suspects who flee from officers. He will also describe the various dog breeds police departments use and why. \nBIO: \nSgt. Justin Kribs has been with the Grand Rapids Police Department since the spring of 2008.  He was assigned to Patrol and then joined the Canine Unit in 2012.  He worked his first canine partner\, Bobby\, from 2012 to 2018.  After Bobby retired\, Officer Kribs trained his current partner\, Eli. \nIn February of 2023\, Officer Kribs was promoted to Sergeant and took over the Canine unit in July of 2023.  Sgt. Kribs supervises 7 other canine teams\, as well as still works K9 Eli.  K9 Eli was injured in November of 2022 when he was stabbed by an assailant during a standoff.  Eli was able to return to full duty only a couple of months after his injury.

DESCRIPTION:Charles Burke – President & CEO of Frederik Meijer Gardens \nBIO –  \nSince 2014\, Charles has served as President and CEO of The War Memorial\, a waterfront cultural campus in Grosse Pointe Farms that curates experiences focusing on arts\, culture\, film\, patriotism\, community connectivity\, and leadership. His work has empowered the total transformation of The War Memorial as a regional impact organization welcoming more than 300\,000 patrons with over 3\,000 events annually\, all while incubating more than 65 nonprofit organizations. The Nationally Registered Historic campus includes the new Fred M. Alger Center (opened in fall 2022)\, designed by the ROSSETTI architecture team; Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge Park and Gardens\, visioned by famed international artist Anilore Banon; WM Community Foundation; Patriot Theater for arts\, culture\, and film; an Arts and Community Wing inclusive of multiple galleries and classrooms; and an Italian Renaissance-style estate home designed by American architect Charles A. Platt. Charles’ leadership has reimagined an institution now positioned to grow in all aspects of its diversified business lines while redefining the role of a nonprofit institution as a catalyst for a forward-thinking community. \nPassionate about providing unfettered accessibility to the arts for all people\, Charles spent a significant portion of his career as both an executive and orchestral conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. As Senior Director of Education for the DSO\, Charles was responsible for the development of the Pincus Education Center in Midtown Detroit as well as programs such as the African American Fellowship program\, a graduate-level training program to radically improve diversity in classical music; the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles\, one of the largest youth training programs in the United States; and connecting Orchestral musicians with children from all communities and all ages through concerts\, classroom interactivity\, and technology-based learning. As an Orchestral Conductor and Music Director\, Charles led more than 300 performances on the famed Orchestral Hall stage\, specialized in working with young people and having the privilege of working with artists such as Leonard Slatkin\, Itzhak Perlman\, Midori\, Emanuel Ax\, Michael W. Smith\, Marcus Belgrave\, Rodney Whitaker\, and George Shirley. His artistic leadership included 22 world premieres and commissions; multiple recordings; serving as a robotic computer model for ASIMO the conducting robot; and regularly working as a college instructor\, adjudicator\, guest conductor\, and artistic consultant for organizations throughout the country. \nCharles\, a graduate of Leadership Detroit XXXV\, enjoys several volunteer roles\, including Board Director for Jefferson East\, Inc.\, TechTown Detroit\, Community Advisory Board for Beaumont Health Grosse Pointe\, Editorial Board of the Grosse Pointe News\, Executive Producer for Live Inspired Productions\, and Michigan Youth Arts Festival. He holds degrees from George Mason University and West Virginia University\, executive leadership training at the Harvard Business School and Columbia College\, and as a Creative Alliances Fellow and Emerging Non-Profit Leaders Fellow for National Arts Strategies. \nA Washington\, D.C.\, metropolitan region native\, Charles and his wife moved to Michigan last century to pursue graduate studies at the University of Michigan.
