With the goal of bringing positive change to the world\, he advocates for eliminating physical and social barriers in the built environment so all individuals can flourish\, maintain their independence\, and improve their quality of life. \nTo help organizations reach their diversity and inclusion goals\, Mike deploys a human-centered design approach. He works with companies such as Merck & Company\, Oracle\, Amazon\, DHL\, Pfizer\, Nielsen\, TruStage\, Nationwide Insurance\, MetLife\, Bloomberg\, T-Mobile\, and Siemens Energy. He was instrumental in bringing the Mary Free Bed YMCA to fruition – the first building in the world to receive Universal Design Certification from the Global Universal Design Commission (GUDC). \nAs a recognized thought leader on the topic of universal design\, Mike has presented throughout the world to leaders at the U.S. Access Board in Washington D.C.\, San Antonio Inclusion Summit\, Disability:IN Chicago\, Bloomberg Leadership Summit\, CoreNet Global\, and Zero Project in Vienna\, Austria. \nMike co-authored a published research paper for the Disability and Health Journal titled “Participation by Design – Integrating a social ecological approach with universal design\,” and authored a chapter for the National Inclusion Project Standards specifically applying universal design thinking to facilities and equipment\, so that no child has to sit on the sidelines. In 2018\, Mike led the effort to create a proprietary set of universal design assessment tools and strategies receiving registration from the US Copyright office.

In addition to her directorship\, she is a professor in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley. \nEarning her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in Curriculum Studies\, her Masters in Sociology from The New School for Social Research\, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from William Smith College with a double major in English and Religious Studies\, Lisa’s interdisciplinary background continues to inspire her current civil discourse work. She grounds herself in the idea that every person has a right to be understood\, and through her teaching\, scholarship\, and service\, Lisa seeks ways to elevate people’s stories in the face of societal barriers that often silence people. \nWhether leading a civil discourse training in the community or facilitating group dialogue in the classroom\, Lisa’s storytelling approach to civil discourse aims to foster mutual understanding through humanizing dialogue rather than divisive debate. \nOriginally from upstate NY\, Lisa enjoys spending time with family and friends; working in her intergenerational garden; and going on backpacking adventures.

He assumed this role in September 2023\, bringing a passion for community service and extensive experience within the Red Cross. \nTony began his Red Cross career in 2015 with the Service to the Armed Forces program\, where he supported military members\, veterans\, and their families through vital workshops and outreach. He later served as an account manager for biomedical services\, overseeing more than 100 blood collection accounts at community\, business\, and educational organizations throughout West Michigan. \nBefore joining the American Red Cross\, Tony served as a squad leader in the Michigan Army National Guard\, with service overseas in Afghanistan\, Germany\, and Poland. He holds a bachelor’s degree in public health from Central Michigan University. \nIn his capacity as Executive Director\, Tony acts as a key community liaison and advocates for Red Cross programs — including disaster relief\, blood services\, volunteer engagement\, and support for military families — helping strengthen the chapter’s impact throughout West Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dana Hebreard\, Ph.D. – Assistant Director\, CLAS Center for Experiential Learning\, GVSU \nSpeaker Topic: Talent Link initiative at Grand Valley State University \nBio: \nDana\, originally from Brooklyn\, New York\, grew up in various big cities such as Chicago and Miami. She attended Indiana University Bloomington\, where she received undergraduate degrees in journalism and communication. It was during her campus involvement that she discovered her passion for student development\, which inspired her to earn a master’s degree in college student affairs and leadership. A lifelong learner\, she continued her education at Western Michigan University earning a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. The dissertation focused on the career decision making process utilizing the social cognitive career theory titled “Opt Out: Women with Children Leaving Mid-Level Student Affairs Positions” (2010).” \nDana served as the associate director of academic advising at Calvin University where\, amongst other things\, she facilitated faculty advisor training\, managed student advising records and organized the logistics of the academic component for first year and transfer student orientation. Most recently\, she was the executive director of the advantage center (home of high-impact practices including undergraduate research\, internships\, and community-based learning) and career services at Aquinas College. She oversaw the center’s strategic goals\, taught career development classes\, and advised students and alumni on various career-related topics. Dana also worked with individual employers and several college consortiums\, to develop recruitment strategies and to help broaden the scope of employment opportunities for students. \nAs the Talent Link Program Specialist\, Dana collaborates with colleagues across campus to recruit students and support the Talent Link Scholars serving as a key point of contact internally and externally to ensure successful program development and implementation. \nShe is an active member of NACADA (The Global Community for Academic Advising) and AHRM (Association of Human Resource Management). She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Girls Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore. Dana and her partner\, Michael\, live in Grand Rapids and have three boys (Patrick\, Andrew\, and Evan) and a puggle named Penny.

He will share personal insight into pivotal moments of WWII—from combat in France to the post-war aftermath in the Pacific. \nHis reflections on humanity\, conflict\, and reconciliation resonate deeply in today’s world. \nGene will be joined by Joel Westphal\, Deputy Director of the Gerald R. To achieve the region’s vision of being one of the leading growth economies in the nation\, Randy collaborates with business and community leaders to focus efforts on strengthening three strategic pillars: People\, Place\, and Prosperity. \nSince taking the helm at The Right Place in 2021\, the organization has supported the creation and retention of 4\,000+ jobs and $1B+ in new capital investment for the region. Under Randy’s leadership The Right Place has grown to support an 8-county collaborative in the Greater Grand Rapids Region. Randy has expanded the organization’s initiatives to include community development and placemaking\, along with increased talent retention\, expansion\, and attraction services. Randy also championed the launch of a 10-year regional tech strategy that will position the region as one of the leading tech hubs in the Midwest. \nPast Experience \nRandy joined The Right Place team in 2021 after serving as Senior Vice President of economic development at the Downtown Denver Partnership. There he led efforts to attract investment\, recruit and retain business\, and advocate for housing\, retail\, and public policy initiatives. He supported downtown projects totaling more than $1 billion in investments. \nPrior to his role at the Downtown Denver Partnership\, he led the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership\, a two-state\, eight-county regional economic development effort. Randy executed a $24 million Prosper Omaha strategy which brought $3.9 billion in new capital investment and 13\,000 new jobs to the area. \nRandy’s career began at economic development organizations in Evart and Monroe\, Michigan before he moved to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). DESCRIPTION:Join the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids on June 26th for our annual “Passing of the Tiller” Luncheon\, a special tradition marking the transition of club leadership. \nDuring this ceremony\, outgoing 2024–2025 President Eunice Lopez-Martin will officially pass the presidential tiller to incoming 2025–2026 President Shannon Kolarik. We’ll celebrate the accomplishments of President Eunice’s term and hear her reflections on a successful year. Incoming President Shannon will also share her vision and goals for the upcoming Rotary year. \nThis event is a great opportunity to honor our leadership\, connect with fellow members\, and look ahead to an exciting new chapter for our club.

SUMMARY:6.19.25 - Kevin Guskiewicz - President\, Michigan State University
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kevin Guskiewicz – President\, Michigan State University \nBio: \nKevin M. Guskiewicz\, a neuroscientist\, academic leader and concussion researcher\, was appointed president-elect of Michigan State University on Dec. 8\, 2023\, by the MSU Board of Trustees and started as president on March 4\, 2024. \nA member of the University of North Carolina’s faculty since 1995 and founding director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes\, Guskiewicz was appointed UNC’s Chancellor in 2019. He is a nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions and maintains an active research portfolio\, serving as co-principal investigator on two multi-center research grants. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of sports medicine and neuroscience. \nHis team’s groundbreaking work has garnered numerous awards and has influenced concussion guidelines in the NFL and NCAA. In 2011\, Guskiewicz received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for his innovative work on the diagnosis\, treatment and prevention of sport-related concussions. In 2011\, he convinced the NFL and NCAA to change the kickoff rule\, which resulted in a 50% reduction in concussions on kickoffs. In 2013\, Time magazine named him a Game Changer\, one of 18 “innovators and problem-solvers that are inspiring change in America.” \nGuskiewicz earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Chester University\, a master’s in exercise physiology/athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate in sports medicine from the University of Virginia. \nBorn and raised in Latrobe\, Pennsylvania\, he and his wife Amy have four children: Jacob\, Nathan\, Adam and Tessa.
