The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids will pick a list of finalists in early March. Winners will be announced at the Frederik Meijer Service Above Self Award Dinner event on April 16, 2019.
Service Above Selfie:
Open to all volunteers in the community who take a selfie of themselves or their group volunteering. The volunteer and/or non-profit then posts the picture on social media with the following hashtags: #serviceselfie19 #rotarygr. The volunteer and/or non-profit is also encouraged to tag the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids’ Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Twitter accounts.
Contest runs from December 1, 2018 to March 15, 2019. At the end of the campaign, photos are selected for the following prizes:
First Place Prize: $5,000 donation to a charitable organization in that person’s honor.
Second Place Prize: $2,000 donation to a charitable organization in that person’s honor.
Third Place Prize: $1,000 donation to a charitable organization in that person’s honor.
Most “Liked” Prize: $500 donation to a charitable organization in that person’s honor.
All charitable donations are subject to our rules of entry and use of photos for marketing and publicity purposes. The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids Charities Foundation will make the prize checks payable to the organization for whom the individual volunteered.
We will announce the Service Above Selfie Awards at our Service Above Self Award dinner on April 16, 2019. The individual who posted the photo, their guest, and the Executive Director of the organization for whom the individual volunteered will be invited to the Service Above Self Award dinner.
How the Winners are Selected:
The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids’ Service Above Selfie Committee will select five selfies based on the following criteria:
1. The Selfie’s creativity and interest — are you having fun?
2. The impact of the volunteer project on the community
3. The Selfie’s engagement of the online community, measured by how many times the post was shared and / or liked
4. The Service Above Selfie Committee will place emphasis on pictures depicting one or more of Rotary’s six areas of focus:
a. Promoting Peace
b. Fighting Disease
c. Providing Clean Water
d. Saving Mothers and Children
e. Supporting Education
f. Growing Local Economies
5. Group Selfies will count as one entry into the contest, but the number of times the Selfie is shared and/or liked will increase that Selfie’s rating for the engagement of the online community.
The picture does not need to be a true “selfie” to be eligible for an award. Volunteer events that occur prior to December 1, 2018 are eligible for an award provided the photo is submitted during the contest period.
For the First, Second, and Third Place Prizes, the Service Above Selfie Committee will present the top five entries to the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids’ Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will select the winning entries by vote of the Board of Directors. The Most “Liked” Prize is determined by a qualifying entry’s total engagement of the online community as measured by the number of shares / likes.
To be eligible for a donation from the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids Charities Foundation, the organization for who the individual volunteered must be a 501(c)(3) organization that is organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes. The Rotary Club of Grand Rapids Charities Foundation may ask the recipient organization for a copy of the organization’s financial statement from the past year and other budget information that may not be contained in the past year’s financial statement.
