DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alan Steinman is the Allen and Helen Hunting Research Professor at Grand Valley State University’s Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI). He previously served as AWRI’s director for 22 years\, helping establish the institute as a leading center for freshwater research and environmental stewardship. \nDr. Steinman is an aquatic ecologist whose research focuses on freshwater ecosystems\, water quality\, harmful algal blooms\, groundwater\, microplastics\, and the health of the Great Lakes and Michigan’s inland waters. His work has been published in more than 200 scientific articles\, book chapters\, and books\, and his research has received more than $60 million in grants. He has also provided testimony and expertise to the U.S. Congress and state legislatures. \nA Fellow of the Society for Freshwater Science\, Dr. Steinman received the organization’s Award of Excellence in 2025 in recognition of his significant contributions to freshwater science. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany/Aquatic Ecology from Oregon State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
