SUMMARY:3.11.21 - Dr. David Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special presentation from Dr. David Pilgrim as he tells us about the Jim Crow Museum that he founded and curates\, then takes us on a virtual tour via ZOOM. \nDr. David Pilgrim is a public speaker and one of this country’s leading experts on issues relating to multiculturalism\, diversity\, and race relations. He has been interviewed by National Public Radio\, Time magazine\, the British Broadcasting Corporation\, and dozens of newspapers\, including the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Boston Globe\, Chicago Tribune\, and the Los Angeles Times. He is best known as the founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum-a 12\,000 piece collection of racist artifacts located at Ferris State University. The museum uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote social justice. \nPilgrim is the author of several books\, including Understanding Jim Crow (PM Press\, 2015)\, and Watermelons\, Nooses\, and Straight Razors (PM Press\, 2017). His writings\, many found on the museum’s web site (ferris.edu/jimcrow)\, are used by scholars\, students\, and civil rights workers to better understand historical and contemporary expressions of racism. The web site has been linked to hundreds of sites and has resulted in Pilgrim being invited to deliver public lectures at dozens of institutions\, including Stanford University\, Spring Arbor College\, the University of Michigan\, Smith College\, and the University of North Carolina. \nPilgrim is an applied sociologist with a doctorate from The Ohio State University. He believes that racism can be objectively studied and creatively assailed. In 2004\, he produced\, with Clayton Rye\, the documentary Jim Crow’s Museum to explain his approach to battling racism. The film won several awards including Best Documentary at the 2004 Flint Film Festival. Marc Haefele\, a film critic at the Los Angeles Daily News called the documentary\, a “grisly low-key masterpiece.” Jim Crow’s Museum is shown nationally on affiliates of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Pilgrim and Carrie Weis created two traveling exhibitions to take the Jim Crow Museum’s lessons to a national audience. Hateful Things is a 39-unit traveling exhibition of objects found in the Jim Crow Museum. The objects are accompanied by didactic panels that place the images in the proper historical context–offering insight into their past and present popularity–and effects. Hateful Things has traveled to many institutions\, including Aquinas College\, Delta College\, Utah Valley State College\, and the Black Holocaust Museum. Pilgrim and Weis\, in 2005\, created a second traveling exhibition\, Them: Images of Separation\, a 35-unit exhibition that deals with the stereotyping of women\, poor Whites\, gays\, Jewish Americans\, Native Americans\, Mexican Americans\, African Americans\, and Asian Americans-and others. Pilgrim believes that Reverend Martin Luther King\, Jr. was right when he said\, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Diversity is more than a black-white issue; more\, indeed\, than a racial issue. \nIn 2006\, Pilgrim served as a consultant to Will Smith (directorial debut) for the UPN television show\, All Of Us. Mr. Smith wanted to make sure that the episode-called “The N-Word”-dealt with issues of race and racism in a non-stereotypical fashion. \nPilgrim challenges audiences to think deeply about diversity and race relations. He is a Ferris State University Distinguished Teacher. Pilgrim has spent his adult life using objects of intolerance to teach tolerance. It works. His goal is to get people talking about diversity and race relations in meaningful ways-and\, then\, to go and do something positive.

SUMMARY:5.27.21 - No Luncheon - Memorial Day observance
DESCRIPTION:  \nTaken from all about history….. \nMemorial Day Meaning\nMemorial Day Meaning – The History\nEach May\, the United States celebrates a day called Memorial Day. Does Memorial Day have meaning? What is the history of Memorial Day? \nMemorial Day was first widely observed in May 1868. The celebration commemorated the sacrifices of the Civil War and the proclamation was made by General John A Logan. Following the proclamation\, participants decorated graves of more than 20\,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. \nIn years since World War 1\, the day has become a celebration of honor for those who died in all America’s wars\, as well as those who are Veterans and current members of the US military. \nIn 1971\, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. The United States celebrates this holiday the last Monday of May. \nMemorial Day Meaning – Reagan’s Speech\nPresident Ronald Reagan is credited with reviving the practice of honoring Memorial Day and its meaning. One of his famous speeches was given at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day in 1986. \n“Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It’s a day of thanks for the valor of others\, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others. It’s a day to be with the family and remember. \n“I was thinking this morning that across the country children and their parents will be going to the town parade and the young ones will sit on the sidewalks and wave their flags as the band goes by. Later\, maybe\, they’ll have a cookout or a day at the beach. And that’s good\, because today is a day to be with the family and to remember. \n“Arlington\, this place of so many memories\, is a fitting place for some remembering. So many wonderful men and women rest here\, men and women who led colorful\, vivid\, and passionate lives. There are the greats of the military: Bull Halsey and the Admirals Leahy\, father and son; Black Jack Pershing; and the GI’s general\, Omar Bradley. Great men all\, military men. But there are others here known for other things. \n“Here in Arlington rests a sharecropper’s son who became a hero to a lonely people. Joe Louis came from nowhere\, but he knew how to fight. And he galvanized a nation in the days after Pearl Harbor when he put on the uniform of his country and said\, ‘I know we’ll win because we’re on God’s side.’ Audie Murphy is here\, Audie Murphy of the wild\, wild courage. For what else would you call it when a man bounds to the top of a disabled tank\, stops an enemy advance\, saves lives\, and rallies his men\, and all of it single-handedly. When he radioed for artillery support and was asked how close the enemy was to his position\, he said\, ‘Wait a minute and I’ll let you speak to them.’ [Laughter] \n“Michael Smith is here\, and Dick Scobee\, both of the space shuttle Challenger. Their courage wasn’t wild\, but thoughtful\, the mature and measured courage of career professionals who took prudent risks for great reward—in their case\, to advance the sum total of knowledge in the world. They’re only the latest to rest here; they join other great explorers with names like Grissom and Chaffee. \n“Oliver Wendell Holmes is here\, the great jurist and fighter for the right. A poet searching for an image of true majesty could not rest until he seized on ‘Holmes dissenting in a sordid age.’ Young Holmes served in the Civil War. He might have been thinking of the crosses and stars of Arlington when he wrote: ‘At the grave of a hero we end\, not with sorrow at the inevitable loss\, but with the contagion of his courage; and with a kind of desperate joy we go back to the fight.’ \n“All of these men were different\, but they shared this in common: They loved America very much. There was nothing they wouldn’t do for her. And they loved with the sureness of the young. It’s hard not to think of the young in a place like this\, for it’s the young who do the fighting and dying when a peace fails and a war begins. Not far from here is the statue of the three servicemen—the three fighting boys of Vietnam. It\, too\, has majesty and more. Perhaps you’ve seen it—three rough boys walking together\, looking ahead with a steady gaze. There’s something wounded about them\, a kind of resigned toughness. But there’s an unexpected tenderness\, too. At first you don’t really notice\, but then you see it. The three are touching each other\, as if they’re supporting each other\, helping each other on. \n“I know that many veterans of Vietnam will gather today\, some of them perhaps by the wall. And they’re still helping each other on. They were quite a group\, the boys of Vietnam—boys who fought a terrible and vicious war without enough support from home\, boys who were dodging bullets while we debated the efficacy of the battle. It was often our poor who fought in that war; it was the unpampered boys of the working class who picked up the rifles and went on the march. They learned not to rely on us; they learned to rely on each other. And they were special in another way: They chose to be faithful. They chose to reject the fashionable skepticism of their time. They chose to believe and answer the call of duty. They had the wild\, wild courage of youth. They seized certainty from the heart of an ambivalent age; they stood for something. \n“And we owe them something\, those boys. We owe them first a promise: That just as they did not forget their missing comrades\, neither\, ever\, will we. And there are other promises. We must always remember that peace is a fragile thing that needs constant vigilance. We owe them a promise to look at the world with a steady gaze and\, perhaps\, a resigned toughness\, knowing that we have adversaries in the world and challenges and the only way to meet them and maintain the peace is by staying strong. \n“That\, of course\, is the lesson of this century\, a lesson learned in the Sudetenland\, in Poland\, in Hungary\, in Czechoslovakia\, in Cambodia. If we really care about peace\, we must stay strong. If we really care about peace\, we must\, through our strength\, demonstrate our unwillingness to accept an ending of the peace. We must be strong enough to create peace where it does not exist and strong enough to protect it where it does. That’s the lesson of this century and\, I think\, of this day. And that’s all I wanted to say. The rest of my contribution is to leave this great place to its peace\, a peace it has earned. \n“Thank all of you\, and God bless you\, and have a day full of memories.” \nMemorial Day Meaning – A Day of Honor\nDoes Memorial Day have meaning to you? Many communities around the United States have memorial day events at cemeteries where veterans and spiritual leaders speak. Other cities and towns host parades to honor the military. However\, in many cities around the country\, these events have been forgotten. \nIt is important for Americans to take time to remember the sacrifices that bought their freedom. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate this important American holiday: \n\nSend a note of thanks to Veterans you know.\nIf you know someone who has lost a loved one in battle\, offer to help with a household project or help meet a special need they have.\nVisit a local cemetery and place flags or flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.\nFly the American flag at half-staff until noon.\nParticipate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 pm. Pause and think upon the meaning of Memorial Day.

SUMMARY:7.15.21 - Scott Blakeney & Indian Trails Camp Visit
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our annual visit to Indian Trails Camp\, to learn about their history and our Club’s long-term support.  Since the 1950’s IKUS/ITC has exclusively served individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities\, from across Michigan and neighboring states. \nScott Blakeney will be providing an update about programming\, the impact of COVID and how IKUS/ITC has been able to adapt.  Enjoy a tour of the campus and a delicious lunch prepared by the camp chef.  If you’ve been to camp before\, things may look a bit different\, so come and see what’s been happening! \n************************************************************************************************************************** \nIndian Trails Camp and IKUS Life Enrichment Services \nIndian Trails Camp was founded in 1952 by the Kent County Cerebal Palsey Parents Club. These parents wanted a traditional camp experience accessible for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. Two teachers from Eastern Orthopedic School joined the club\, along with medical professionals from Mary Free Bed. Tom Muller was president of the Club. Some financial aid was provided by the State of Michigan and Grand Rapids Board of Education. \nIn 1953 the first camp was held at Yankee Springs\, and Wayne Muller was one of the camp counselors (and ITC Board President in 1971!). The second year camp was held at St. Mary’s Lake\, and camp continued to grow. This success led the founders to search for a permanent camp home\, and further organization. Grand Rapids Rotarian Fritz Meuller Jr contacted the Rotary Club regarding support\, and that year the Club donated the money designated for their Christmas Party\, to the camp. \nThrough the efforts of the GR Rotary\, the City of Grand Rapids agreed to lease a parcel of land in Aman Park as the permanent home of camp. Indian Trails Camp became a reality\, and the 1955 camp season was held in Aman Park (there was only one building at the park that year). Progress continued\, and in 1956 ITC became a non-profit corporation. John Bertsch was the first president of the Indian Trails Camp Board of Directors. \nLater\, after receiving the gift of a pool\, the GR Rotary conducted an $80\,000 fund drive and built eight sleeping cabins. Next $115\,000 was raised for renovations of the Ojibway Lodge\, pool enclosure and a pontoon boat. The GR Rotary conducted another fund drive in 1980 chaired by Donald Porter. $130\,000 was raised to build a sewage system\, maintenance building\, laundry\, bathing facilities\, and an outdoor chapel/ampitheater. As the kids aged Indian Trails began serving both children and adults\, now 75% of campers are adults. Indian Trails continues to be the only fully accessible camp in Michigan\, and one of a handful in the U.S. \nNow fast forward about 30 years… \nIndian Trails Camp recognized the need for year ‘round respite beyond the summer months\, when campers came for a fun weekend and caregivers got much needed rest. Around 2010 we identified other service and program needs in west Michigan to further support the individuals we serve. Eventually these services grew to include: individual Community Living Support\, group Community Living Support\, Skill Building\, and Supported Employment. Like camp\, the majority of individuals that participate in these programs and services are adults. \nOnce these services became established\, the Indian Trails Camp name didn’t accurately describe everything we had to offer. Camp leadership decided to create a “parent” brand to encompass the entire compliment of programming. IKUS Life Enrichment Services was born\, using the word IKUS from the Indian Trails Camp song. \nScott Blakeney joined Indian Trails Camp/IKUS Life Enrichment Services as their Executive Director in October of 2018. Prior to ITC/IKUS he worked for the State of Michigan for 15 years\, and spent 10 years in the for-profit world before being employed at the State. Scott joined the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids in 2019\, and is excited to continue the longstanding tradition of serving people in west Michigan. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Spent early years growing up on a family farm in Bourbon\, IN.  After graduating from high school\, attended Purdue University obtaining a BS in Food Science.  While at Purdue\, met my future wife Mary.  Later God blessed us with 2 children\, Rob and Amy. \nFor forty years\, worked in the Refined Edible Oil (soy and canola) Industry for large Agriculture Corporations.  Lived in either Fort Wayne\, IN or Saint Louis\, MO. for majority of those years. \nAfter retirement in 2013\, Mary and I relocated to our favorite vacation spot\, Elk Rapids\, MI.  It was here where I started my Rotary journey.  Organization with the motto “Service Above Self” was exactly what I was looking for in retirement phase of my life.  Bonus has been\, through Rotary\, many doors were opened to the local Volunteer Network where wonderful people have been met. \nFor past two years\,  served as District 6290 Foundation Committee Polio Chair.  What a special day it will be\, for all Rotarians\, when Polio is totally eradicated from the World!!
