Upcoming community service events include: a ramp build, park clean-up and a Michigan Dental Association Foundation volunteer opportunity.
Leslee Fritz welcomed visitors. Paula Jastifer, John Crosby and Amanda Williams gave a bit of history of the STRIVE program and it’s importance to area students. The program is over 20 years old, has served 250 students and has raised $250,000 for college scholarships. The students have volunteered building bikes for Elves & More, as well as working at Indian Trails camp and Feeding America. The program Sponsors were thanks as well as all the parents, mentors, teachers and school administrators that help make the program a success. Sponsors include: Alan Abraham and his company, Jay Wisentaner-Norris, Perné & French, Jon Hankins at Aquinas, the Peter Seccia family and Eve Rogus at Lighthouse group.
John Crosby introduced our speaker, Christian Verley, the football coach at Ottawa High School and ISS Coordinator. Coach Verley explained how he uses the “Be FAST” model to help motivate students.
The STRIVE students were introduced in turn, presented with certificates and were encouraged to say a few words about their experience with the program. Union High School Juniors included: Ryonna Brown, Auner Caldero, Malayja Goodman, Dallas Jackson and Randy Jimenez. Union Seniors included: Delfino Francisco Paola Diaz, Shardasia King and Edwin Ponce Juarez. Delfino was awarded an extra $1000 scholarship for excellent attendance. Shardasia won an award for altruism and Randy won an award for attitude.
Ottawa High School seniors Devon Baker, Timeiya Blanton, Mikia Bullock Dajalon Copeland, Victoria Gamble, Janxia Gates, Erias Herman, and Marcus Lofton were honored as well as two sets of twins, Rakshan and Sayroan Mohamed and Jaylin and Kaylin Howard.
Chuck Caldwell noted that Rotary GR members Andy DeVries and John Salin were instrumental in starting the STRIVE program at our club.
The STRIVE Banquet was a huge success!
