We celebrated 25 years of STRIVE (Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Value of Education), a great student mentoring partnership between our Club and Grand Rapids Public Schools. We celebrated this year’s STRIVE students and their mentors, who are juniors or seniors at two GRPS schools, Union and Ottawa Hills. Click here to learn more about STRIVE. Begun by Rotarians John Salan and Andy DeVries, leading the charge today are Paula Jastifer, Mary Slafkosky and Doug Thompson.
Dr. Ronald Gorman, assistant superintendent of pre-K-12 instructional support and has been involved with STRIVE and GRPS since he was principal at Creston high school. On behalf of Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal, he thanked our Club for its work, saying “You have stayed with them, stuck by them for 25 years. The help you’re providing the students is the help they need.”
We also heard from Jessica Austin, a 2007 GRPS graduate, later a GVSU alum who is a mentee turned mentor. Austin, who now works as a health and safety officer for Consumers Energy, provided inspirational words to the students: “That push from someone who doesn’t have to love you is what you need.”
